Discovering the South Ionian Islands with Sailing Holidays
Last week was the spring half term holiday and I had the pleasure of spending time with my family sailing around the beautiful South Ionian Islands of Greece.

As we moved between turquoise bays, colourful harbours and timeless fishing villages, it was impossible not to reflect on how generations of sailors have been drawn to these waters.
The South Ionian Islands – including Kefalonia, Ithaca, Lefkada, and Meganisi a– have been maritime crossroads for thousands of years. Ancient Greek traders sailed these routes long before the age of tourism, while Venetian merchants later left their mark on the islands’ architecture, culture and seafaring traditions. The legendary island of Ithaca, home of Odysseus in Homer’s Odyssey, remains a powerful reminder that these waters have inspired travellers for millennia.5
Yet the South Ionian’s modern reputation as one of Europe’s finest sailing destinations is relatively recent. Blessed with reliable summer winds, short passages between islands, sheltered anchorages and crystal-clear waters, the region became increasingly popular with recreational sailors during the latter half of the twentieth century. Unlike some of the more demanding sailing grounds of the Aegean, the Ionian offers a relaxed pace that appeals equally to experienced skippers and newcomers alike.
This year marks a significant milestone for one of the companies that helped make sailing holidays accessible to thousands of British families. Sailing Holidays celebrates its 50th anniversary, having been founded in 1976 as the Flotilla Sailing Club before becoming Sailing Holidays Ltd in 1987. Over five decades, the company has introduced countless people to flotilla sailing, particularly in Greece, where the Ionian Islands remain its spiritual home. (Sailing Holidays)

The concept of flotilla sailing transformed family sailing holidays. Rather than requiring extensive local knowledge or complete self-sufficiency, sailors could enjoy the freedom of their own yacht while benefiting from the support, guidance and camaraderie of a lead crew. For many, it became the perfect introduction to Mediterranean sailing. (Sailing Holidays)
As we sailed between picturesque harbours, enjoyed long lunches beside the water and watched the sun set over distant mountains, it was easy to understand why so many people return year after year. The appeal is not simply the sailing itself. It is the combination of adventure, history, family time and the uniquely relaxed rhythm of Greek island life.
Fifty years after Sailing Holidays first began bringing sailors to these waters, the South Ionian remains much as it always has been: a place where every bay tells a story, every harbour offers a warm welcome, and every voyage creates memories that linger long after the sails have been lowered.
For my family, it was a wonderful week. For the thousands who have discovered these islands under sail over the past half-century, it is easy to see why the South Ionian continues to cast such a powerful spell.

Now back to the grindstone- 7 week countdown to summer holidays!
